Beyond Gatekeeping: the Rise of Social Networking Platforms for Creatives

At Résonner, breaking down barriers and championing accessible creative careers are at the heart of what we do. Today, we’re giving into the complex world of gatekeeping within the creative industry. Who gets to shape the narrative of creativity? Who defines success? And who exactly holds the keys to visibility in this dynamic landscape?

In our digital era, social networking platforms aren't just virtual galleries; they're lifelines for creatives seeking clients and opportunities to thrive. The rise of platforms like Creatively, Contra, Behance, and the latest addition, NOVA, speaks volumes about the demand for creative talent and the ever-evolving freelance landscape.

Behance, Creatively, and Contra offer an open-door policy, providing a platform for creatives of all backgrounds to showcase their portfolios and connect with potential clients. However, NOVA takes a different approach. Positioned as a bridge between up-and-coming and established freelancers and their clients, NOVA streamlines the hiring process for a variety of roles – from digitechs to stylists to production assistants. According to Forbes, NOVA just raised $1.75 million in funding, signaling confidence and support from investors in its mission and potential for growth. The NOVA community, which began as a private Instagram page, has also helped fill over 7,000 jobs for creatives. But to join their new social networking and job platform, creatives must submit an application, complete with optional referrals. While quality control is an understandable concern, Who's on the other side of the screen evaluating these applications? Who determines which creatives get a coveted spot on NOVA's roster?

Consider the talented videographers honing their craft on college campuses. Despite their work documenting local events and photoshoots, they may lack the high-profile clientele or connections to boost their application. While the NOVA platform is undoubtedly an incredible resource, these questions must be asked.

Let's confront a harsh reality: whether wielded by humans or algorithms, biases infiltrate every facet of the creative realm. The curation of creative spaces, intended to showcase talent and foster collaboration, can inadvertently perpetuate inequalities. This may result in certain voices and perspectives being overlooked or marginalized.

Some platforms like Dazed Club pivot towards fostering community rather than serving as job marketplaces. Yet, there remains a gap in the market for platforms that provide resources, job opportunities, and networking opportunities without a paywall.

The market is missing a true middle ground – a platform that offers resources, job postings, and networking sans barriers. As we navigate these challenges, let's tackle biases head-on and pave the way for a more inclusive and equitable creative industry where talent reigns supreme, regardless of background or pedigree.  If you utilize any of these platforms, let us know your thoughts! We're excited to see what NOVA has to offer to the creative space.
